Vegan Cheesy Bread Sticks

These are the most flavorful cheese sticks I have ever consumed and they just so happen to be vegan!

I was inspired to try making vegan cheese sticks after traveling last week and trying some in a vegetarian/ vegan restaurant in Puerto Rico. I swear everything I tried at that charming little place was super delicious!

Here is my take on vegan cheese sticks with a little Puerto Rican flare, I hope you enjoy them!

Fold the other half of the dough over the cheesy half. Roll and pinch the edges together (will basically look like a giant calzone). Carefully transfer to a large baking pan. Poke a few holes in top of dough with fork. Brush top with olive oil and sprinkle with cumin and cayenne.

Ingredients:

3/4   Cup Pepper jack style shreds (I use Daiya)

3/4 Cup Monterrey jack style shreds (I use Daiya)

Olive oil

Ground Cumin

Cayenne Pepper (optional)

*Marinara for dipping

Bread Dough:

2 1/4 Tsp Dry active yeast

3/4 Cup warm water

2 Cups Unbleached bread flour

1 Tsp Salt

1/2 Tbsp Coconut Palm Sugar

2 Tbsp Olive Oil

Directions:

For the bread dough, add the yeast to a bowl of warm water, let sit until frothy. In a large bowl, mix the bread flour, salt, and coconut sugar together, then add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the flour. Stir to incorporate. If the dough is a little dry add a few extra teaspoons of water.

Knead by hand for 2-3 minutes. Roll into a ball. Place in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Punch dough down, turn over onto a lightly floured surface and roll into a  16″ x 13″ Rectangle.

Sprinkle the cheese style shreds on half the dough, lengthwise. Fold the other half of the dough over the cheesy half. Roll and pinch the edges together (will basically look like a giant calzone). Carefully transfer to a large baking pan.

Poke a few holes in top of dough with fork. Brush top with olive oil and sprinkle with cumin and cayenne.

Bake at 375°F for 20- 25 minutes, until lightly brown.

Let cool for a few minutes, then cut into thin strips.
